A Shady Courtyard

This awkward and unwelcoming space resulted from the construction of a retaining wall immediately behind the house. We took the opportunity to create a secluded courtyard with an area for storage at one end.

The planting includes plants for shade and partial shade with climbers who's scent lingers in the enclosed space. Birch trees have been used to give structure and ferns, hellebores and heuchera add to winter interest.
